Bringing Justice to the Wild: A Look at the Efforts to Combat Wildlife Crime in Ireland

Wildlife crime is a serious issue in Ireland, with a range of illegal activities impacting various species and habitats. According to the National Parks and Wildlife Service, there have been over 2,000 incidents of illegal hunting and poaching reported in the country in recent years. This includes the illegal killing of protected species such as badgers, hares, and birds of prey, as well as the illegal trade in endangered species such as reptiles and amphibians. In addition to the harm caused to individual animals and populations, wildlife crime can also have negative impacts on ecosystems and local communities.

These crimes are punishable under the Wildlife Act 1976 and the European Communities (Birds and Natural Habitats) Regulations 2011 which are the main legislation in place in Ireland to protect wildlife and their habitats.

Animal Law Ireland is a website that provides a general introduction to Irish legislation that provides protection to all animals and the environment.
